VIZIER FP6 integrated project aims to perform a ground-breaking impact on the identification of potential new drug targets against RNA viruses through comprehensive structural characterization of the replicative machinery of a carefully selected and diverse set of viruses http://www.vizier-europe.org/

European Project VIZIER
1st. Industrial and Scientific Meeting
27th April 2007 – Marseille, France.
The European integrated project VIZIER (for Viral Enzymes Involved in Replication) based on 23 top European laboratories aims at « deciphering » the RNA virus genomes (more than 200 viruses included) and at characterizing the three-dimensional structures of the proteins involved in their replication. These enzymes are high priority targets for the development of new antiviral compounds. RNA viruses are a major health concern: they are responsible for the majority of viral diseases (Hepatitis, Dengue, Flu, Measles…), for almost all emerging diseases (SARS, Chikungunya, Ebola, H5N1…), and some of them could be used for bio-terrorism. The VIZIER project federates complementary scientific specialties encompassing bioinformatics, virology, genomics, protein engineering, crystallography, and biochemistry.
The audience of the “special event” on Friday 27 April will learn about progress made in the first two years of VIZIER existence. Epidemiological aspects of emerging diseases will be debated in the perspective of viruses and vectors adaptation to climatic and way of life changes. The VIZIER scientists will describe the last structural genomics results. The industry will present recent advances in the development of antiviral compounds. Some “success stories” involving VIZIER results will be detailed (SARS, Chikungunya, Dengue, Caliciviruses).
